Federal Government Set to Pay N-POWER Beneficiaries’ 8 Months Outstanding Allowance

The Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has promised to pay N-Power beneficiaries their withheld eight-month allowances.

The N-Power National Programme Manager, Akindele Egbuwalo, confirmed this, adding that the affected persons are beneficiaries of the Batch C programme who had been owed for eight months.

The Federal Government had suspended the N-Power programme last week, stating that the scheme had ghost beneficiaries, while some of its consultants were withholding participants’ funds.

The N-Power programme was established by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari to address youth unemployment with beneficiaries paid N30,000 monthly stipend.

Akindele, in a statement, noted that the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation had recovered some funds.

At the meeting held with representatives of the N-Power beneficiaries, he said: “The good news is that the funds have been recovered and you will be getting your money soon. Payment for N-Power Beneficiaries Batch C who have been owed for eight months will begin soon.”

Akindele revealed that the Minister of Humanitarian affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, was able to address irregularities within the Program and other social investment programmes.

He said, “These irregularities have made the common man to lose faith in the ability of Government to provide social safety cover for its population but Dr Betta Edu is engaging all necessary steps to resolve these issues and deliver the Renewed Hope Mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Nigerians

“Many irregularities which hitherto had sabotaged the smooth implementation of the Program are being addressed.

“It would be recalled that on assumption of duty it was noted that many beneficiaries did not receive payment for their monthly allowances while monies were been held up by the consultant managing the enrollment and payment system whose contract had long expired.”

This is coming barely two months after The Batch “C” of N-Power beneficiaries wrote to Tinubu to call for his urgent intervention as they lamented that they had not been paid their stipends for the past eight months.

The N-Power batch “C” beneficiaries in the letter written by their National Publicity Secretary, Gbadebo Adesiyan, said that the nonpayment of the stipends had caused immense distress, inconveniences and hardship to millions of unemployed Nigerian graduates captured under the scheme.

According to Adesiyan, they were told that the delay on the payment of their stipends was because funds for the said unpaid months had not been approved or disbursed into the National Social Investment Management System (NASIMS) account by the presidency.

Israel strikes Syrian airport

An Israeli airstrike targeted the airport of Syria’s government-held city of Aleppo, a war monitor said, days after a similar strike hit Aleppo and Damascus airports.

“An Israeli air strike coming from the direction of the sea struck Aleppo airport,” Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP.

Syrian state media also confirmed the strike, with state TV reporting an “Israeli aggression targeting Aleppo International Airport”.

On Thursday, Israeli strikes knocked Syria’s two main airports of Damascus and Aleppo out of service, in the first such attack since a weekend Hamas assault on Israel triggered fierce fighting.

Saturday’s strikes hit the airport “hours after it went back into service, knocking it out of service again,” said the British-based monitor, which has a wide network of sources inside Syria.

Israeli strikes have repeatedly caused the grounding of flights at the airports in the capital Damascus and northern city Aleppo, both of which are controlled by the government of war-torn Syria.

During more than a decade of war in Syria, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes on its northern neighbour, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian army positions.

Israel rarely comments on individual strikes it carries out on Syria, but it has repeatedly said it would not allow its arch-foe Iran, which supports Assad’s government, to expand its footprint there.

Iran, which backs Hamas, on Saturday celebrated Hamas’s assault on Israel, though it insisted it had had no involvement in it.

The strikes were the second such attack on Syrian airports after Hamas’s surprise October 7 attack from Gaza ignited a war that has killed more than 1,300 people in Israel.

IMF Warns Nigeria, Others to Stay Away from Chinese loan, Source Domestic Credit

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African nations are at a turning point in their relations with China.

As a result, the Fund stated that the Chinese government is starting to lessen its exposure in the region.

According to the IMF, African nations must begin to look into domestic funding for their projects.

It stated this in a report titled “At Crossroads: Sub-Saharan Africa Relations with China,” published on Friday, October 13, 2023.

China is Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest trading partner

The report claims that over the past two decades, Sub-Saharan Africa and China have developed mutually advantageous economic relationships. China has grown to be the region’s largest trading partner, a substantial supplier of credit, and a significant investor in foreign direct investment.

But it also noted that China’s assistance to Africa had received some criticism. Due to a downturn in growth and a decrease in appetite for risk, China has curtailed its lending efforts in sub-Saharan Africa.

It noted:

“The projected future deceleration in China’s growth is likely to affect African trading partners negatively over the medium term, mainly through reduced trade. Therefore, countries in the region must strengthen their resilience and implement structural reforms to foster economic diversification, deepen intraregional trade, enhance competitiveness, and catalyze domestic growth.”

The IMF advised Nigeria to review its economic policy in light of the trend and China’s declining influence on the region.

Building resilience, in the opinion of the IMF, will aid in mitigating the adverse effects of China’s slowing GDP. According to the Fund, increasing regional trade integration allows African states to diversify their export and import markets.

It noted that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) holds great promise. However, the IMF said its implementation will necessitate a significant lowering of trade restrictions and enhancements to the general trading environment. This, it said, includes a reduction of non-tariff trade restrictions.

According to the report, if all of these predictions come true, median goods trade within Africa may rise by 53%, as well as with the rest of the world, by 15%.

IMF estimates that this may lift 30–50 million people out of extreme poverty and increase the real per capita GDP of the average African nation by more than 10%.

Restoring buffers and bolstering policy frameworks will aid in lowering macroeconomic vulnerabilities and reliance on outside sources

Nigerian Man Flees After Allegedly Killing His Brother-In-Law For Marrying Another Wife

Sunday Mathew, a Nigerian man, is currently on the run, reports have shown.

The man is on the run after he allegedly killed his sister’s husband, Onwe Uchenna for marrying a second wife, witnesses told SaharaReporters.

Enrol Your Children In Schools Or Go To Jail – Senate Bill

The Senate has passed for first reading a bill that recommends a fine of N50,000 to parents who default in providing their children with primary and secondary school education.

The Red Chamber also recommended free meals for every child in the country.

The bill proposed by Senator Orji Kalu titled, ‘Compulsory free Universal Basic Education Act 2004, Section 2’ states that every government in Nigeria shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age.”

The act further states that “Every parent shall ensure that his child or ward attends and completes his primary school education and junior secondary school education by endeavouring to send the child to primary and junior secondary schools.”

“The Act further states that stakeholders in education in a local government area shall ensure that every parent or person who has the care and custody of a child performs the duty imposed on him under section 2(2) of this Act.”

The act further noted that a parent who contravenes the earlier prescription should be liable, on the first conviction, to be reprimanded.

“On a second conviction, a fine of N2,000 or imprisonment for a term of one month or both; and on subsequent conviction, to a fine of N5,000 or imprisonment for a term of two months or to both.”

The Senate, however, in its amendment, proposed N50,000 fines, instead of the N5,000 previously stated in the Act.

The amendment states, “Section (4) (b) of the Principal Act is amended by deleting N2,000 and inserting N20,000. Section (4) (c) of the Principal Act is amended by deleting N5,000 and inserting N50,000.”

It added, “Section 3(2) of the Principal Act is amended by deleting N10,000 and inserting N100,000.”

It stated, “A person who receives or obtains any fee contrary to the provisions of subsection (1) of this section commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding N10,000 or imprisonment for a term of three months or to both.

“Every parent shall ensure that his child receives full-time education suitable to his age, ability and aptitude by regular attendance at schools.”

However, the Senate proposes, N100,000 in replacement of the N10,000.

The Senate proposed, “Section 3(2) of the Principal Act is amended by deleting N10,000 and inserting N100,000.”

Responding to this development, the Programme Coordinator for Basic Education at Reform Education, Nigeria, Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, noted that while the move by the lawmakers seems commendable, there should be an investigation into the additional charges by the public schools across the country.
