NAFDAC warns against using contaminated Whippy Mayonnaise in circulation

**NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Unwholesome Whippy Mayonnaise**

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the sale and consumption of an unwholesome mayonnaise brand known as Whippy. In a statement released on Monday, July 24, the agency disclosed that it received a complaint from a concerned consumer, prompting immediate action.

After receiving the complaint, NAFDAC conducted random sampling of the Whippy Mayonnaise product for laboratory analysis. The results of the analysis were unsatisfactory, raising serious concerns about the product’s safety and quality.

According to the agency’s findings, the locally sourced mayonnaise, manufactured in Onitsha, Anambra State, had turned rancid and displayed an abnormal color, deviating from the original color of mayonnaise. Shockingly, these irregularities were detected despite the product still being within its shelf life.

In response to the alarming findings, NAFDAC has taken swift action, directing all zonal directors and state coordinators to initiate surveillance and remove the affected batches of the unwholesome Whippy Real Mayonnaise from circulation. The agency emphasized the critical importance of caution and vigilance among distributors, retailers, and consumers to prevent any further consumption, sale, or distribution of the implicated batches of the product.

For public awareness, NAFDAC has provided the specific details of the implicated batches to watch out for:

– Pack sizes: 245g and 460g in plastic bottles
– Manufacture Date: June 2022
– Best Before: December 2023
– Batch numbers: OA2GP220614A (Pack size 245g), OA2GP220611A, and OA2GP220617A (Pack size 460g)

The agency’s primary concern is the health and safety of Nigerian citizens, and this warning serves as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential health risks associated with consuming the unwholesome Whippy Mayonnaise.

NAFDAC urges the public to be vigilant and report any further instances of the implicated batches being sold or distributed. Consumers are advised to check the packaging of Whippy Mayonnaise carefully and avoid purchasing or consuming any products from the affected batches.

As the situation unfolds, NAFDAC will continue to investigate the matter to ensure the prompt removal of the tainted products from the market, while also taking appropriate actions against the manufacturer to safeguard public health and uphold food safety standards in the country.

‘’Anyone in possession of the above-mentioned batches of Whippy Real Mayonnaise is advised to submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office. If you, or someone you know, have consumed this product, or suffered any adverse reaction/event after consumption, you are advised to seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicion of distribution and sale of unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: [email protected]” it said
