The incident, which occurred in the evening hours, left three persons dead, several cars destroyed, and the atmosphere filled with grief.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, stating that a Ford Edge vehicle with registration number LSR980FU from Lagos, colored in black with double exhaust, was involved in the calamity. The car was being driven by a lady who apparently lost control of the brakes, leading to the catastrophic chain of events.
The vehicle hurtled towards a woman selling roadside delicacies such as chicken, roast plantains, and potatoes. Tragically, the pedestrian and a man seated in a nearby joint were also caught in the path of the speeding car, resulting in fatal injuries.
As the Ford Edge continued its uncontrollable course, it collided with a concrete signboard, dragging the victims along for a considerable distance before crashing into a fence. The impact was devastating, and the casualties were immense.
Adding to the horror, a red spider Toyota Camry XLE with plate number RSH271TU from Abuja was rammed onto by the out-of-control Ford, further escalating the tragedy.
Concerned onlookers took swift action to prevent mob violence against the suspected driver, ensuring her safety before authorities intervened. At the time of the report, officers from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had arrived at the scene, evacuating the casualties to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for urgent medical attention. The Nigerian Police Force also appeared to manage traffic and restore order amidst the already chaotic environment.
This heart-wrenching accident comes merely 24 hours after another tragic incident in Calabar, where a tree fell on a commercial minibus along the Murtala Mohammed Highway by SUBEB, claiming at least one life and causing multiple injuries.
